The Summer of 2018 will see over 15,000 young athletes roll into high school weight rooms across the State of Texas with a common goal of getting better! These kids will invest in an experience for 6–8 weeks that will reward them for the rest of their lives.

Every year, as parents drop their young athletes off that first day, we are asked the same question: “what do they need?” The answer is, “not much,” but there are a few things you will want to bring:

Staying hydrated is certainly one of the most critical needs of our athletes as they will be sweating for the entire session and will certainly spend some time in the triple digit heat. We will have water on hand, but the convenience of your own water bottle or jug is much more ideal. As you rotate from station to station, you’ll never be too far away from a quick sip.

Pro tip: if you don’t love the taste of water, slice up a lemon or other fruit and toss it in your bottle. You can refill your water throughout the day and keep that same great flavor!

Hard work doesn’t require a fancy uniform! Show up in your favorite workout gear and get after it. You’ll want to make sure to wear comfortable shoes that you can lift and run in. While cleats aren’t a necessity, they may be helpful during some speed and agility movements. If you do bring some cleats, make sure to bring regular shoes for the weight room.

Pro tip: try a breathable, long-sleeve shirt. It sounds crazy, but if you’re outside it will protect your skin from that Texas sun and as you sweat the shirt soaks it in and provides a built in mist machine as the breeze rolls through.

The only other thing you’ll want to show up with every day is a relentless attitude! An attitude that says, “I don’t know what coach will throw at us today, but I’m about to absolutely crush whatever it is!” Always walk through the door ready to attack an opportunity to get better! Don’t come in with a mindset that you are obligated to be there. You “get to” wake up and go get better, you don’t “have to.”

Pro tip: Some days you will wake up and not feel like going to PC. Good news: feelings aren’t facts! Get out of bed and just show up! Go through the motions if you have to, but we bet that if you can fake that relentless attitude for a bit, before too long you’ll be crushing another day of hard work!

That’s it! No fancy equipment needed. No coordinated dress. Show up. Work your tail off. Go home. Recover. Repeat. There’s going to come a day where August is going to ask what you were doing in June and July. We got two months to get our answer ready!!
