My Experience After Becoming an Open Humanist

By Abdullahi Muhammad Jidda (Northern Nigeria Humanist)

1.0 How my Doubts about Islam Started

My name is Abdullahi Muhammad Jidda, a Nigerian Humanist who was born into and raised by a Muslim Family in Gashua, Bade Local Government Area of Yobe State.

My journey from Islam to Humanism started in the form of petty doubts about some basic Islamic creeds that brought about minor splits to the Islamic faith — the “difference of Aqeeda”. It all began when I was young. My family are adherents of a sub-branch of Islam called “Darika,” which is part of the Sunni branch of Islam. This sub-branch of Islam are widely known for their belief in Sufism. Their goal is to achieve the absolute trust of Allah and become saints (or Sufis) to the extent that their word becomes the word of Allah. They are also known for their hypnotic love towards Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through the songs of praises they sing to the prophet.

The adherents of the Darika believe that those people who have gotten the trust of Allah and become saints or Sufis fly with their divine feathers every Friday to pray in Makkah. My doubts began by disbelieving in the idea that those saints fly to Makkah every Friday while I always pray together with them in the mosque. When I shared my doubts with family and friends, they said, “Abdullahi, you can’t see the Kharama (mystical power) of a saint with your ordinary, human eye.”

Since Nigeria carries out its legal activities with a secular constitution, a person will not be beheaded for leaving Islam. Although many Muslims will celebrate the beheading of ex-Muslims in the country, the government has not yet accepted and legalized this penalty since it is dominated by nearly equal populations of Christians and Muslims, each enjoying positions of political power.

After I have come out to the open last year, 2019, like all other Humanists from Muslim countries and communities, I was considered to have been affected by a mental disorder. In…
