My journey to Andela Bootcamp

Picture taken on the day of my interview

My journey to programming has been quite simply-difficult. I’ve in many ways, on many days felt like an Olympian going through the ringer and finding myself at the finish line. What no one tells you however is that the end is usually the beginning and you have to go on. Just one look back at every storm weathered to be at the end confirms that much. So I go on, and the reason I keep ticking, the reason I keep reaching is because I relish it all. The assignment, the journey, the challenges, the results, it all points to my inevitable growth as a developer.

I started this journey greatly misinformed, thinking i would be put through a bunch of classes in the same context as a university and have a bunch of tutors hounding me to learn and come to classes,. Well i was disillusioned rapidly, when i discovered the popular Andela acronym “YOYO”, basically saying you own your learning.

Having little or no background in programming i took a deep dive in, going through a series of crash courses on youtube. Leveraging the internet as my tutor i was able to understand the basics and also pleasantly surprised how much information was one there, waiting for any curious and committed mind. But then there are things that just can't be found online, here i found that asking questions to more experienced minds was an effective way to accelerating my progress.

Recently i had to rewrite a piece of code from scratch because i forgot to implement a key feature. It was daunting and i mostly thought of giving up, but then i saw how far i had made it up this particular hill and given that i have a healthy fear of falling, i pushed on. Self motivation it seems has become a habit of mine, and i find myself reciting these mantras “i am smart, i can do this”, and what has become a my slogan “sleep is for the Weak”.
