My favorite statement of Deming

I am sure many of you heard name Deming as PDCA cycle or understanding of variation in Kanban Systems as special causes and common causes

While reading the Book — Out of Crises, W. Edwards Deming, I noted down some statements from the book.

1. “Quality begins with the intent, which is fixed by the management.”

2. “Best effort is not sufficient, everyone must do the right thing rather than their best.”

3. “Seek long terms accords with supplying.”

4. “Constant improvement of their incoming quality is possible if vendor and purchaser work together.”

5. “You cannot build quality by inspection, but when the quality is not there, inspection may be the only answer.”

6. American managements approach: “How long may we go in quality without losing customer.” whereas Japanese management approach: “They just go right ahead and improve the process without regard to figures.” Japanese thus improve the productivity, decrease costs, and capture the market.

7. “A common disease that afflicts management and government administration the world over is the impression that “Our problems are different.” They are different, to be sure, but the principles that will help to improve quality of product and of service are universal in nature.

8. To introduce a major change: “Support of top management is not sufficient. They must know that it is that they are committed to, that is what they must do. Those obligation cannot be delegated. Support is not enough, action is required.… and if you cannot come, send nobody”

Frankly, I was so surprised to see how much Scrum, Kanban and SAFe was influenced by this book.

Item Number 8 has been my favorite! What is your favorite statements? Do you agree with him?
