Lecture 5

It was a great fun watching all the videos about Henry VIII and I also watched “Six the musical”, but before we go there, let’s talk about other prominent figures of that time.

Firstly, there is Henry VII who organised policies to not be dependent on parliament and basically encouraged the development of early capitalism. With his “Mercantilism” and the illusion of free will that benefited only the King. But I like the guy, despite his greed for money.

Secondly, there is Elizabeth I, with all the «forever loyal to England» staff, horrible histories gave her a very prominent appearance and arrogance, but she is also fine with me) A strong woman, not caring much about her marriage and dedicating herself to work instead, iconic.

But now back to “Six the musical” which tells HERstories of all six wives of Henry VIII.For me it most certainly an example of great storytelling and “ear wormy” tunes.

Of course, you do have to get past the little rhyme of “divorced, beheaded, died; divorced, beheaded, survived.” But what if the show’s view of the wives is notional?

Their power may have been limited during their lives by men and forgotten afterward with time, but hey! it’s still a tale you can dance to.

This a histo-remix with half a dozen of “queen B’s” on the stage. Henry’s first and longest-wed wife, Catherine of Aragon, puts on a role of a golden Beyoncé. Her anti-divorce anthem “No Way” could be retitled “Keep a Ring on It”: “My loyalty is to the Vatican/So if you try to dump me, you won’t try that again.”

And so all the other Queens represent different pop stars:

No. 2, Anne Boleyn, insisting that the other women’s woes cannot possibly compare to her decapitation. Her Lily Allen-like number(from Mean Girls): “Don’t Lose Ur Head”.

Henry’s third and best-loved wife, Jane Seymour, wears black and white and sings “Heart of Stone,” a torch song that instantly recalls Adele’s “Hello.

No. 4, Anne of Cleves, here called Anna. “Get Down,” her funky rap – sounds like Nicki Minaj.

No. 5, Katherine Howard arrives as a pink, ponytailed Ariana Grande, with a bubble gum pop called “All You Wanna Do”.

After all the grand entrances Queen No. 6 Catherine Parr decides that history, which has merged them into “one stupid rhyme” defined by the one thing they had in common (Henry VIII), must be rewritten. For people to see them as individuals!!

Six” puts just a rewritten history on stage and it is a great pop musical. But let’s not talk about its accuracy. It’s not a research paper but a work of commercial theater. That nevertheless ceases to amaze you with a fantastic production and performances by a beautiful cast.
